Peptide Research Glossary

Plain-language explanations of laboratory catalogue identity, quality testing, batch records and analytical documentation.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

A

Acetate salt
A salt form in which acetate is the counterion associated with the peptide. The stated salt form is part of material identity and should be recorded in specifications and analytical documentation.
See also: TFA salt, Lyophilisation
Amino acid
The building block of peptides and proteins. Each amino acid has a central carbon bonded to an amine group, a carboxyl group, a hydrogen, and a variable side chain. The sequence and composition of amino acids determines a peptide's biological activity.

B

Bacteriostatic water (BW)
Sterile water containing a preservative, commonly 0.9% benzyl alcohol. It is a laboratory reagent with its own specifications and controls; this glossary does not provide preparation or administration instructions.
See also: Reconstitution, Sterile water

C

Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A document from the testing laboratory that records the results of quality control tests on a specific batch of a product. For peptides, a COA typically includes the HPLC purity percentage, the mass spectrometry identity confirmation, the batch number, and the test date. A legitimate COA comes from an independent third-party lab, not the supplier.
See also: HPLC, Mass spectrometry
CJC-1295
A synthetic analogue related to growth hormone-releasing hormone. Catalogue records should distinguish variants with and without a Drug Affinity Complex because they are different research materials.
See also: Ipamorelin, GHRH, Half-life

D

Dalton (Da)
The unit used to express molecular weight. One dalton equals approximately the mass of a single hydrogen atom. Small peptides typically range from 500 Da to 5,000 Da. Larger peptides approach the molecular weight of small proteins.
Disulfide bond
A covalent bond formed between the sulfur atoms of two cysteine residues. Disulfide bonds stabilise peptide structure and are important for activity in many peptides. Incorrect disulfide bond formation (disulfide scrambling) during synthesis can reduce purity and potency.

G

GLP-1 receptor agonist
A molecular classification for compounds studied for activity at the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor. Classification does not establish that a catalogue material is licensed, safe or effective for human use.
See also: Retatrutide, Semaglutide
GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)
A regulated quality framework for manufacturing controls and documentation. A GMP statement should be tied to a defined facility, activity and evidence; it does not by itself make a research material an authorised medicine.
Growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH)
A peptide hormone used as a reference point in receptor and signalling research. Synthetic analogues are distinct catalogue materials and must be identified by their own specifications.
See also: CJC-1295

H

Half-life
The time required for a measured quantity or concentration to fall by half under defined conditions. A reported value depends on the study model and conditions and should not be converted into human-use guidance.
See also: CJC-1295, Semaglutide
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)
An analytical technique that separates compounds in a mixture based on how strongly they interact with a stationary phase inside a pressurised column. In peptide analysis, reverse-phase HPLC separates the target peptide from synthesis impurities, truncated sequences, and oxidised variants. The area under the target peak divided by the total peak area gives the purity percentage.
See also: Certificate of Analysis, Mass spectrometry

I

Ipamorelin
A synthetic research peptide classified as a growth-hormone secretagogue receptor agonist. This is a molecular description, not a claim of safety, efficacy or suitability for human or animal use.
See also: CJC-1295, GHRP

L

Lyophilisation (freeze-drying)
A process that removes water from a frozen material by sublimation under reduced pressure. The resulting physical form and its storage conditions should be recorded in the product specification and batch documentation.
See also: Reconstitution, Bacteriostatic water

M

Mass spectrometry (MS)
An analytical technique that measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. In peptide quality control, mass spectrometry confirms that the molecular weight of the compound matches the expected weight of the target peptide. A mass spec result that matches the theoretical molecular weight is strong evidence of correct chemical identity.
See also: HPLC, Certificate of Analysis
Melanotan II (MT-II)
A synthetic cyclic analogue related to alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and used as a laboratory research material. It is not supplied or licensed here for human or cosmetic use.
See also: Melanotan I, Alpha-MSH
Melanotan I (MT-I)
A synthetic linear analogue related to alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and distinct from Melanotan II. It is not supplied or licensed here for human or cosmetic use.
See also: Melanotan II

P

Peptide
A short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds (the covalent bond formed between the carboxyl group of one amino acid and the amine group of the next). By convention, chains of 2-50 amino acids are called peptides; longer chains are proteins. The distinction is not strict.
Peptide bond
The covalent amide bond linking amino-acid residues in a peptide chain. Bond arrangement is part of chemical structure and can be examined using appropriate analytical methods.

R

Reconstitution
A general laboratory term for returning a dried material to a liquid state under a defined validated method. This glossary does not provide a product protocol, injectable preparation or administration guidance.
See also: Bacteriostatic water, Lyophilisation
Retatrutide
A research compound also identified as LY3437943 and classified by activity reported at GLP-1, GIP and glucagon receptors. A catalogue listing is not an authorised medicinal product or a human-use recommendation.
See also: GLP-1 receptor agonist

S

Semaglutide
A compound classified as a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Pharmaceutical products containing an authorised active substance are legally and operationally distinct from unlicensed laboratory research materials.
See also: GLP-1 receptor agonist, Half-life
Sterile water
Water manufactured to a defined sterile specification and supplied as a laboratory or medical reagent according to its labelling. This glossary does not recommend it for preparing or administering any site product.
See also: Bacteriostatic water, Reconstitution

T

TB-500
An N-terminally acetylated seven-residue fragment, Ac-LKKTETQ, corresponding to residues 17–23 of full-length Thymosin Beta-4. TB-500 is not the complete 43-residue protein and is also distinct from the separate Tβ4-derived tetrapeptide Ac-SDKP, so findings for those molecules should not be attributed to TB-500 automatically.
See also: BPC-157
TFA salt
A salt form in which trifluoroacetate is the counterion associated with a peptide. Counterion identity and measured content should be addressed in the material specification where relevant.
See also: Acetate salt

V

Vial septum
The elastomeric closure used to seal a vial. Its material, integrity and compatibility form part of container-closure and laboratory handling controls.
